The John Kobal Book Award was set up in association with The Royal Photographic Society Awards and ran from 2003-2005. Its purpose was to recognise the best first published monograph by a living photographer. The photographer must either have been a British national published in any country worldwide or of any nationality but originally published by a publishing house based in the UK.

The Royal Photographic Society and The John Kobal Foundation are delighted to announce Hashem El Madani as winner of The John Kobal Book Award 2005 for his book Studio Practices. The £1,000 prize was presented to the winning photographer at the annual Royal Photographic Society Awards ceremony on 6th October 2005.

The judging panel for the 2005 Award comprised John Kobal Foundation Council members: Simon Crocker, Managing Director, Light Industry Ltd; Liz Jobey, Associate Editor of Granta, writer and editor; and Terence Pepper, Curator of Photography, National Portrait Gallery; together with representatives from the Royal Photographic Society: Russell Roberts, Senior Curator of Photographs, The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television and Mark Haworth-Booth, Senior Curator of Photographs, Victoria & Albert Museum.
All Books submitted will be donated to the RPS collection at The National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford as part of the developing collection.
